| Sano...Beaten Up??? by Makoto Sagara |

| One Part | ||||
by Makoto Sagara Megumi was interrupted from her work by Kenshin, Kaoru, and Yahiko dragging the lanky body of Sanosuke into her clinic. She looked up from her patient to the trio. "What happened? Did he drink too much and get a bump on the head? Or did he pick another drunken fight? He's always good for that one." "No, Megumi-dono, he was helping us shop when he was taken by surprise by ten men. We were too far away to notice until he was down. Unfortunately, before he went down, he managed to take three of them." Kenshin somberly spoke. "Well, I won't treat hoodlums. Sanosuke is bad enough." "You won't need to Megumi. They are dead." Kaoru blurted out. A small gasp escaped from Megumi. "Dead... but he...oh dear kami!" She sobbed. Kenshin came over to her and put his arm around her shoulders. "Megumi-dono, daijoubu ka?" She looked up with a small smile. "Shitteirumasen, Ken-sama. Demo, arigatou gozaimasu..." Looking around the room, she saw her bed in the corner. "Take Sano there please. I will look at him when I have finished with my patient. Arigatou." She went back to the elderly woman who had come in for a cut on the foot. "Wear this on your foot for two hours to avoid any kind of infection and see me tomorrow. That's all I can do for you today." The woman looked up gratefully and gave her payment. "I don't know what I would've done without you Megumi-sensei." "Your foot would fall off," she responded with a slight giggle. "Remember to come back tomorrow. Ja ne." "Ja ne," the woman responded with a smile. While this exchange was going on Kaoru came over to Kenshin. "Do you think Megumi-san cares for Sano? She certainly acts like it at times... Like this is her bed, and yet she is having us put him in it. And she is strained even with the old woman who just left. Kenshin..." "I don't know, Kaoru. She may or may not, but the simple fact is that she is a doctor. Sano has saved her more than once, and I guess she must feel some gratitude towards him. If he hadn't, I don't think she would treat him, but he is Sano, so there is your answer." Yahiko, who surprisingly enough had said quiet, looked up at Kenshin and Kaoru. "Do you think that Sano will be ok?" he asked anxiously. Kaoru answered him. "Megumi will do everything for him that she can. She is a good doctor, and she won't let him die if she can save him." "I know, but he is...."Yahiko couldn't bring himself to finish that thought. It was too painful. "Kaoru-dono, Yahiko, lets go back. If we stay here, we will only be in Megumi-dono's way." With that, Kenshin turned and headed out the door, followed by Yahiko and lastly Kaoru. She turned around one last time at the man who she considered a friend. "Please be careful, Megumi....", was all she said as she turned and left out the door. Megumi stared at the man who had been her savior on more than one occasion. She smiled at looked down at him lovingly. "When will you ever learn that violence does not solve all the problems of the world? Then again, I would rather them dead than you, Sagara Sanosuke. Well, let me take a look at all your injuries." "Me…gu…mi…" She looked up, surprised. "Sano, did you say something?" No answer. "Hmmm. I must be hearing things then." She carefully took off his shirt and examined his chest. "Good work. Three broken ribs, a bruised rib, and a lot of bruises. Well I don't see anything else. No really bad broken limbs or contusions to your upper body. Now lets take a look at your legs and back…" She then realized that she would need help to move him. "K'so. I can't move him alone. Stupid men. Well if all you have now is the worse, then you are a lucky man. I'll just take a look at your head, then." She inspected every inch of Sano's head. "A couple of bumps and maybe a headache later. I'll clean up these cut and bruises." As she walked away, she felt a hand on her arm, weakly holding there. "Arigatou…" "Doo ishimashita." She felt a slight smile creep upon her lips. "Yes, you are very welcome…" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * She cleaned all his wounds, and then turned to cooking dinner for herself. She fixed a light soup for Sanosuke, in case he woke up before the night was over. She ate in silent reverie. Her thoughts were interrupted by a loud exclamation of anger. "Shimatta. I feel like I went drinking for three days straight. What the hell happened to me?" She hid her smile and walked into her sleeping quarters. "Nice to see you are awake. You looked almost dead when you were brought in. How do you feel, really?" "Like crap." He touched his taped ribs. "And I want a drink." "Not until you are better." "I'm a man. I don't need you to tell me what to do, onna!" "And I am your doctor, you stubborn man! I say that you need rest! When Ken-sama, Kaoru & that brat brought you in to me, you were close to dead. I have taken care of your wounds, but rest. I like you better unconscious anyway! AT LEAST THEN YOU ARE NICE!!!" And with that, she stalked back to her living room, to look around her home. Sano sat there and tried to make his mouth work. He found he couldn't. When she yelled at him, he could have sworn that she had a tiny hint of worry in her voice. 'Why would she worry about me? She hates me, doesn't she?' "Megumi-san, summimasen. I was out of line. Forgive me, onegai?" Megumi's heart sped up, in spite of the fact that she was upset with the jerk. "Humph. Are you hungry?" "Hai." She brought him the soup. "Eat it all, and we will talk later." "Hai." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * He fell asleep after he finished his soup, which gave Megumi time to think to herself again. 'Why am I so worried about a jerk like him? He has a habit of pissing me off, and then making my heart pound in my ears. Why do I let him get to me so much? He is such an ass, but he is so handsome. And nice, in his own way, that he is.' "Okay. Now I am speaking like Ken-sama. Kami, help me. Ha ha! At least Kenshin is an honorable man." She entered the room, walked over to Sano, and looked him over again. 'He will not be nice tomorrow. I'll bet money on it.' She found nothing wrong with his healing, so she walked over to the closet across from the window. 'I guess there is all harm in the world in making him move. It is sad that I'm going to sleep on the floor of my own house. Oh well…' She pulled out blankets and a pillow that she usually saved for severely injured patients. 'Might as well bathe before I go to bed as well.' She grabbed some extra clothes and towels and headed to the bath. 'A hot bath is just what the doctor ordered when dealing with a patient like that Sanosuke.' She undressed and slid right into the water. 'Glad that I had that man start the bath water earlier, before he left. This is nice.' She closed her eyes and lost herself in the heat and serenity of the water. Sano sat up after a while. 'Where is that woman? Did she do something stupid again? She has been gone a while. I still don't believe that she thought that I was asleep. Ha!' He tenderly touched his ribs. 'Ghodz, they are sore. It's nothing that hasn't happened before though.' Sano stood up and looked around. 'I've never been to her home since she became the town doctor. Nice place. She has done a good job with herself, but like I would tell her that?!' He walked into her treating/living room. No sign of the lovely doctor. 'Hmmm…Where is she?' He finally walked out to the bathhouse. "She wouldn't still be there, would she?" He asked himself out loud. He opened the door, and sure enough there was Megumi, asleep in the water. 'In this light, she almost looks beautiful.' He shook his head. 'What am I saying? She is always beautiful, not that I would tell her anything like that.' He walked up to her, and shook her shoulder slightly, ignoring the fact that she was naked. "Megumi-san, get up. You are asleep in the bath. What's wrong with you, onna? Didn't you notice the water?" She woke up, startled by the booming voice. She looked up at Sano, then down at her state of undress, then at him. It took a minute for what occurred to process what was happening. When it did, she raised her hand and smacked her intruder as hard as she could. "How dare you come in on me like this! Don't you have any decency?" She shook with rage and embarrassment. She then realized that who it was she was yelling at. "Why aren't you resting? I specifically told you to rest. Why cant you just listen to me for once? Argh! Stupid lour obnoxious man! Go back!" It took Sanosuke a minute to fully realize what just occurred. "Look, onna, I was worried about you! I wasn't asleep when you left. I was wide-awake, but you were too annoyed to notice. You have been in here for a long time, so I came to look for you. See if I ever worry about you again!" He stomped off as best he could, back to her house. She stood up, more embarrassed than anything else, and got out of the bath. "He was worried about me? Why would he worry about me? He has always said that he hates me.' She got dressed, and slowly walked back into her house. She found him sitting in her main room, with a cup of something. He had a strange look on his face, while he was rubbing the side she smacked. "Sano…" "Nani?" "Summimasen. I was startled. I am so sorry if I hurt you." "It's ok. I don't blame you. I would have done it as well." He took a long hard drink of whatever it was in his cup. "What are you drinking?" "It's not sake, so don't worry. It's water. I do take what you say medically into account sometimes, you know?" He turned and gave her an indignant look. "I'm not an idiot. I do know something…" "Gomen…" She whispered as she walked into the other room. She stood in her room, brush in hand and staring at her reflection in the very rare mirror she had acquired during her time making opium. It wasn't a happy time for her to remember, especially since her opium had killed so many, a friend of Sanosuke's included. All she saw in the mirror was a lonely and sad woman, who was in love with a child-man and who fawned over a man who didn't love her. She was so lonely sometimes. She just wished that someone would see her as a woman, not a doctor or an opium-maker. He watched as she stared into the mirror. Her deft hand brushed the long ebony hair, while she hardly noticed anything. Sanosuke noticed the sad and faraway look on her face. He had seen her look like this many times, usually before Kenshin appeared. He liked this side of her. It was honest and real. The other side was so unnatural. It aggravated him that she was so untrue most of the time, as if she weren't allowed to be herself. The sudden urge to take her in his arms and make love to her came over him. 'What am I thinking? She would kill me, and then have Kenshin kill me too.' He thought if over and decided to try out an experiment. He slowly walked up behind her and kissed the back of her neck. Megumi's hand froze in mid-brush. She had noticed him earlier standing there, watching her intently. She had always hoped that Sano would do something like this. Since the moment she saw him, she wanted this. Now that it had happened, she was lost. She dropped her hand and turned around. He waited anxiously for her to smack him again. When her hand fell and she turned, he was sure that she was going to hit him. Instead, what she did shocked the hell out of him. She brought her hands around his neck and softly placed a sad kiss on his lips. "What do you want from me, Sanosuke? Don't you hate me?" "No, I don't hate you." He kissed her lips, savagely, crushing his lips against hers. He kissed her long and hard. He then broke the kiss, slightly gasping for breath. "I adore you. Do you hate me?" "Never, but we cant do this." "Why not?" "Because you are a hooligan and I am a doctor." "Is that how you will always see me, Megumi?" "No but I cant look past how I feel, what I want, and what I must do. It is impossible, Sanosuke." "If Kaoru can look past Kenshin's past, why can't you look past mine? Because I wasn't fighting for the greater good of reform?" "That's not it." "Then what is it, Megumi? You in love with Kenshin?" He snarled at the small woman in his arms. "That's it, isn't it? You love your precious Ken-sama, and I will never match up to him, isn't that right?" She looked as if she were about to cry. "No, that's not it. I love only you…" She clamped her hands over her mouth. "I shouldn't have said that…" He looked at her. She had a very scared and upset look in her eyes. He didn't want to make her angry, but he needed to hear her say it again, and not take it back. He took her face in one hand and stared into her eyes. "Did you mean it?" "Hai…" He couldn't have had better news. He kissed her again, softer this time, but nonetheless passionately. She broke the kiss this time. "Sanosuke… What do you want from me? I promised to take care of you. I promised your friends. I've done everything I can. Now what?" "I don't know, but right now I want to hold you, before I awaken from this dream." The doctor in her kicked in. "You should…" "…Be getting rest. I know, but I don't care. I want you. Everything you have to offer me, I want it. I need it. I need you, Megumi." The pleading tone in his voice shattered any resistance she could have had with this confusing child-man. She wrapped her arms around his back, and hugged him as hard as she could. "Kisama…" "Oops, gomen nasai…" She started to giggle. "When you heal, we will talk. Until then, rest. NOW!" "Hai, Megumi-sensei." The End. ***Here are a few notes to some of the Japanese used in this fanfic… Shitteirumasen = I don't really know.
